Hello, I'm David Harper with the BBC News. President Biden has condemned the decision to lift the requirement to wear masks in the states of Texas and Mississippi as neanderthal thinking. He said the governors of the two states had made a big mistake given the coronavirus deaths are still rising. More details from David Willis. The US is currently seeing more than 65.000 new cases of the coronavirus every day. There's concern, of course, about new variants of the virus. And the vaccination program whilst it is definitely being ramped up, is still seeing currently about 15% of the population here having received one jab. So, there is a lot of concern that by pressing ahead, reopening, it could set back this country quite considerably.

Germany has become the latest European Union country to change its stance on the use of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine after data from Britain showed it was highly effective in protecting the elderly. Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Oxford jab would soon be authorized for those aged 65 and over. France made the same change earlier this week.

A new study has found that nearly all of the world's COVID-19 deaths are happening in countries with high rates of obesity. Based on the evidence, the World Obesity Federation is calling for prioritizing obese people in vaccination programs. Here's Caroline Hawley. Obesity is a known risk factor for severe COVID-19. But the latest global statistics from the World Obesity Federation are dramatic. It says that death rates are usually 10 times higher in countries where more than 50% of the population is overweight. If the world's obesity epidemic could be tackled before COVID, it says, hundreds of thousands of deaths could have been avoided.

Brazil's most populous state Sao Paulo has announced tough measures to try to slow escalating coronavirus infections as concerns about the country's piecemeal approach to the pandemic. A surge in cases driven by new variance has pushed health systems to their limits. Eyewitnesses in northwestern Nigeria say at least three people were shot by security forces amid chaotic scenes as parents were reunited with their kidnapped daughters in the town of Jangebe. It's unclear whether there were any deaths. Mayeni Jones reports. The shooting reportedly happened during a formal handover by officials to a local chief. According to the AFP News Agency, parents were infuriated at the land for the ceremony which delayed their union with their daughters. One mother told the news agency they were keen to return home before dark, because the roads were unsafe. Kidnapping for ransom is rife in the state. The 279 schoolgirls who were kidnapped by armed men from their school on Friday, have been in the custody of the Zamfara state's government since they were released on Tuesday. Mayeni Jones reporting. World news from the BBC.
