The mayor of the Chinese city of Wuhan, which is the center of the outbreak of a coronavirus says public alerts to the virus were delayed because he has to seek approval from Beijing before he could respond officially. Zhou Shangwang blamed the Central Communist authorities in part for this, but also offered to resign himself in an effort to control the outbreak. The Chinese government has extended the New Year holiday and is discouraging group gatherings.

Members of the Muslim Uygur community from Xinjiang in northwestern China have told BBC of widespread labor abuses suffered by their community. Two individuals have described routine beatings, poor food, and hygiene standards, as well as an expectation of working without pay. China has denied reports of slave labor in Xinjiang.
